From Google to AIs: the shift already happening
More and more people do not search on Google anymore: they ask ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity or Gemini directly. “Do you know a good dentist near me?”, “what software should I use for my practice?”, “how much does a website cost?”.
When someone asks that question, the AI answers with what it knows from the web. If your site does not exist for AIs, you do not exist for that customer. GEO is the discipline that solves exactly that.
What GEO is, in one sentence
GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the set of techniques that lets generative AI engines read your site, understand what your business is about, and cite it when someone asks about your field. It complements SEO: SEO positions you in Google’s list; GEO positions you inside an AI’s answer.
How AIs “read” your site
AIs know the web through automatic crawlers (bots) that visit pages just like Googlebot does. The main ones have names:
- GPTBot and ChatGPT-User (OpenAI / ChatGPT)
- ClaudeBot and Claude-User (Anthropic / Claude)
- PerplexityBot and Perplexity-User (Perplexity)
- Google-Extended (Google / Gemini)
Here is the critical point: your site may be blocking them without you knowing it. Many default hosting configurations, security plugins and CDN services block these bots. And if your site loads all its content with browser JavaScript, several of these bots see a nearly empty page.
The 5 technical foundations of GEO
- Static HTML rendered on the server. The content exists in the HTML from the first byte, without depending on client-side JavaScript. It is the difference between “reading a page” and “guessing a page”.
- Structured data (JSON-LD). Code blocks that declare to machines who you are:
Organization(your business),Service(your services),FAQPage(your frequently asked questions). It is your site explained in the native language of search engines and AIs. - A robots.txt that allows AI bots. Your
robots.txtfile should explicitly allow GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and company. Allowing costs nothing; blocking makes you invisible. - llms.txt. A text file at the root of your site summarizing who you are, what you offer, your prices and how to contact you — written specifically so a language model understands it in a single read.
- Speed and availability. A fast site on the edge gets crawled more and better. Bots abandon slow sites too.
Content that AIs want to cite
The technical foundation makes you readable; content makes you citable. What AIs cite most:
- Direct answers to real questions (“how much does it cost?”, “what is it?”, “how does it work?”), not empty promotional text.
- Specific, verifiable data: prices, timelines, figures, names of laws or standards.
- Primary sources: citing the official source (a law, an agency, a documentation) instead of repeating what another blog said.
- Clear, structured language, with headings that announce what each section answers.
How to know if AIs are already reading you
This can be measured — no guessing needed. If your site is on Cloudflare, the AI Crawl Control tool shows exactly which AI bots visit you, how often, and which pages they read. One of my sites recorded 388 AI bot requests in 24 hours — you can see the full data in the Servando case.
The monthly digital presence report includes this section for all my clients: which bots read you, how much, and where.
Checklist to start today
- Check that your main content is visible without JavaScript (open your site with JS disabled).
- Review your
yourdomain.com/robots.txt: does it allow AI bots? - Ask ChatGPT or Perplexity about your business: do they know you? What do they say?
- Add basic structured data (Organization + your services).
- Create an
llms.txtwith your essential information. - Publish content that answers the questions your customers actually ask.
